A Fields Good 2025 session with FFCC's Mhairi Brown on the true cost of 'cheap' food.
16th October 2025
FFCC’s Head of Food Futures Mhairi Brown was joined by Dr Alice Gilmour (University of Oxford), Lee Robb (Carrick Greengrocers) and Beth Bell (Food Ethics Council) for a discussion at Fields Good 2025, to explore the hidden costs of the UK’s food system.
They talked about how policies that prioritise production have shaped a system which comes at a high price – for farmers, for health and for the environment. Drawing on FFCC’s reports Paying the Price and The False Economy of Big Food – as well as our work talking to citizens in #TheFoodConversation – Mhairi brought the issues of corporate power and consolidation to the conversation.
