Sue debates the motion: "This house believes that in 90 years farming will be a one day a week job"
27th January 2026
FFCC Chief Exec Sue Pritchard, alongside dairy farmer Tracey Roan, delivered the winning speech for the 2026 OFC Oxford Union Debate. The motion was: "This house believes that in 90 years farming will be a one day a week job."
Exploring the future of work in farming, Sue asked some important questions about the role farming plays in rural and local areas – setting out why farming is not only foundational to food and agriculture, but also to nature, environment, economy and community.
She also asked: who stands to profit from shrinking the work of farming further, and making farming a technology-based rather than people-based sector?
"Resist the idea that farming needs to be a part-time job. Let’s imagine instead a future where we invest our resources and our time in what matters – what we really care about. And let’s value it properly. After all, it’s the work on which our health and prosperity depends."
